Sign posted in Tretower village, off the A479 5km N.West of Crickhowell Near Abergavenny, you will find the remains of Tretower castle.
The remains of this castle stands in open countryside against the backdrop of the Brecon Beacons.
The great 13th century stone keep surmounts a small mound, the remains of Tretower's original earthwork castle built around 1100 to control a srategic route through the Black Mountains.
Standing next to the tower is a fine example of a late medieval manor house.
The galleried courtyard is entered through a stone gatehouse reminiscent of the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge.
Outside is a recreated medieval garden
Tretower Court and Castle will be closed to the public for at least a year, beginning on the 1 October 2008, while an ambitious programme of investigation and conservation work takes place. This will include extensive repairs to the roof, considerable refurbishment of the interiors and new interpretation for visitors. We hope the site will re-open in spring 2010.
CADW have done a stunning job during their just-completed 2 year refurbishment project, - several wooden partitions have been re-einstated, and the resulting following rooms have been furnished in late 15th-century style [which adds much more visual interest for the ordinary Tourist and for the late-medieval re-enactment enthuisiast.] - The Kitchen, the Pantry, the Buttery, the Servery, and the Great Hall! A wonderful job, which makes the re-created Tretower Court interiors at least the equal of Barley Hall in York!
